Burt Russell Shurly was born in Chicago on July 4, 1871. After receiving his preliminary education at Northwestern Military Academy in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Shurly graduated with a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin in 1894 and an M.D. from the Detroit College of Medicine in 1895. He interned at Harper Hospital in Detroit and then began the practice of medicine in association with his uncle, Ernest L. Shurly, with an initial focus on tuberculosis. Kathleen Straus is an activist for Michigan education and civil rights. She has been involved in the League of Women Voters, Keep Improving Detroit Schools (KIDS), PRO-Detroit, and the Michigan Association of School Boards. Additionally, Straus co-founded the Michigan Tax Information Council and she was inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame in 2000 for her work in civil rights and education.
