Abstract John Mecartney (1922-2004) was a lifelong activist with civil rights, peace and nonviolent defense and farm worker issues. He graduated from Garrett Theological Seminary and served as a United Methodist minister in Wisconsin. After receiving his Ph.D. from Northwestern University he taught sociology and peace studies at Wayne State University, University of Detroit Mercy, Bluffton College, and Albion College.
