AFT Higher Education Department: Graduate Student Organizing Files

Abstract The AFT Higher Education department was started in the late 1960s to focus organizing faculty and staff on campuses across the country. The department grew to also assist in collective baragining negotiations, and research around the issues of its members in higher education. This collection focuses on the organizing drives dealing with gradaute students. The collection is made up of mainly correspondence, newspaper clippings, journal articles, flyers and contracts.

Abstract The Graduate Employees Union at Michigan State University filed for union recognition on February 2, 2001 with the Michigan Employment Relations Committee. On March 22, 2001 the GEU-MSU held its first general membership meeting and by the following month on April 20th the union had won the collective bargaining election 662 to 192.
