In the fall of 1983 Professor James Moore recorded an oral history interview with Shelton Tappes and Catherine "Babe" Gelles, both early organizers for the United Auto Workers Union (UAW). Taped in Tappes’ Detroit home, the interviewees gave firsthand account of 1937's "Battle of the Overpass," a brutal response by members of the Ford Service Department to the UAW organizing effort against Ford Motor Company. Abstract
In 1977, labor organizer and civil rights activist Shelton Tappes interviewed radical labor leader Philip "Phil" Raymond. Collection consists of the interview transcript on his work organizing for the United Automobile, Aircraft and Vehicle Workers of America (later renamed the Auto Workers Union or AWU) and the UAW.

Abstract
Miscellaneous materials collected by the first chairman of the Foundry Unit of UAW Ford Local 600, of the Rouge plant in Dearborn, Michigan. Mr. Tappes was active in the drive to organize the Ford Motor Company from the campaign's beginnings in 1937 and served Local 600 as recording secretary from 1942-44. The Ford organizing drive and strike of 1949 are discussed. An oral history interview with Mr. Tappes is available.
