The papers in Part 1 consist primarily of notes on contract negotiations between the UAW and the Packard Motor Company in 1953 and the collective bargaining agreements between the UAW and the Chrysler Corporation from 1958 to 1959.
Part 2 of the Ken Morris Collection consists of correspondence, reports, minutes, negotiations material, grievances, arbitration files, speeches and printed material relating primarily to his activities as director of UAW Region 1B and to his Oakland University trusteeship. Mr. Morris retired from the UAW in 1983.

Abstract

Ken Morris served as president of United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 212 and as director of UAW Region 1B. Mr. Morris was active in community affairs and served in various committees such as the Oakland University Board of Trustees, the Oakland County Mental Health Board, and the National Commission on Unemployment and Compensation. Mr. Morris’ papers relate primarily to his activities as Director of UAW Region 1B, and to a lesser degree, his trusteeship at Oakland University, and reflect his interest in matters of health care, unemployment, and labor.

History

Ken Morris joined UAW Briggs Local 212 in 1937 and immediately became active in union affairs. A Line Steward in 1937, he also was Assistant Editor of the Local 212 newspaper from 1937 to 1941. In 1939 he took charge of the Flying Squadron and organized picket lines and strike duties. He served on the Education Committee from 1838 to 1940. After his army service Mr. Morris was elected Recording Secretary fo Local 212.

In 1948 he was elected President of the local and was re-elected five times. In April of 1955 he was elected Director of Reigon 1B, a position he held until his retirement in 1983.

Mr. Morris' community service activities included membership on teh Oakland County Mental Health Board, the Oakland University Board of Trustees, and Chairman of the Oakland County UAW-CAP Council. Other public service assignments included membership on the National Commission on Unemployment and Compensation and the Michigan Employment Security Commission.

Acquisition

The papers of Ken Morris were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs by Mr. Morris and were opened for research in january of 1969. Additional papers were placed in the Archives by Mr. Morris in August of 1970 and were opened for research in October of 1985.

Transfers

A number of photographs, audio tapes of speeches, and items of memorabilia have been placed in the Archives Audiovisual Collection and books, serials, convention proceedings, local constitutions and by-laws, and local union histories may be found in the Archives Library.
