Abstract

Correspondence, reports, minutes, speeches, notes, press releases, outlines of conferences, union cards, awards, memorabilia, and photographs collected by Mr. Hyshka, who served as director of education for UAW locals 80 and 544 in Detroit. Labor education is the major subject of the collection. Correspondents include Mildred Jeffrey, Olga Madar, Norman Matthews, and Brendan Sexton.

History

Nicholas Hyshka began his labor career by joining the Western Federation of Miners in 1913. He later became employed in the auto industry. Hyshka's work with the UAW included serving as Director of Education for Local 544 and he later served in the same post for Local 80. Until his death in 1968, Hyshka remained active in the retiree program of the UAW.

Acquisition

The papers of Nicholas Hyshka were deposited with the Labor History Archives in July 1968 by Miss Dorian Hyshka.
