Scope and Content

The papers of Helen Berthelot relate primarily to her activities and interest in the telephone unions and segments of her oral interview touch upon her political activities in the Michigan Democratic party in the fifties and sixties. She served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Joint Labor Defense Committee, Michigan and the Michigan Council of Affiliates, National Federation of Telephone Workers, organizations formed to support the workers in the General Motors strike of 1946-1947.

History

Helen Berthelot was active in the formation of the union of National Federation of Telephone Workers (N.F.T.W.) in Michigan and subsequently in the union of the Communications Workers of America (C.W.A.) which was formed in 1947 as a result of the reorganization of the N.F.T.W. She joined the headquarters staff of the C.W.A. in 1953 and later served as its legislative representative in Washington, D.C.

In addition to her work with the C.W.A., Ms. Berthelot was active in Michigan Democratic party politics in the 50's and 60's and served as campaign managers for G. Mennen Williams in his campaigns of 1954, 1956, and 1958.

Abstract

Helen Berthelot was active in the formation of the National Federation of Telephone Workers in Michigan and subsequently the Communication Workers of America. Ms. Berthelot was active in Michigan Democratic politics. Ms. Berth paper relate to her activities in the NFTW and the CWA and, to a lesser degree, her service to the Michigan Democratic Party.
