Abstract

In 1950, Walter Day was elected president of UMW Local 12229, District 50. The union dispute with Berry Brothers, jurisdiction disputes at Acme Paint Company, chemical workers' unions, and some union reports and minutes are discussed. One of Mr. Day's correspondents was Homer Ferguson.

History

Walter Day was born in Scotland on October 9, 1694. (This date is the one used by Mr. Day since he had no official record of his birth.) He moved to Windsor, Ontario where he lived for some years before moving to Detroit in 1934. He applied for naturalization for U. S. citizenship in 1939. Mr. Day was very active in the union. His papers and clippings would lead one to believe that he was an avid follower of John L. Lewis. Indeed, Mr. Day became president of Local 12229, District 50, of the United Mine Workers in 1950. Mr. Day retired on October 9, 1959, at age 65.
