Abstract

In the UAW, Mr. Mattson was local union president, regional director, and director of the union's Agricultural Implement Department. This collection covers mainly the 1947 UAW Agricultural Implement Conference, and the 1950 organizing drives. George Addes, Victor Reuther, Walter Reuther are the principal correspondents. An oral history interview with Mr. Mattson is available.

Biography

Born in Minnesota in 1901; Joseph Mattson worked in lumber, railroad construction and agriculture before entering automotive employment in Minneapolis in 1927. He assisted in organizational work in 1934. He became a local union president in 1936 and became a full time member of UAW International Staff in 1941. He served as Regional Director 4, (Chicago) 1943-1947; since November 19l47 he has served as Assistant Director of UAW Competitive Shop Department.

Arranged in four series - Series 1 (Folder 1), Series 2 (Folder 2), Series 3 (Folder 3), and Series 4 (Folder 4).

Materials are not necessarily arranged within the folders.

Acquisition

The papers of Joseph Mattson were deposited with the Labor History Archives in December, 1966 by Mr. Mattson.
