The papers of Mr. Edwards consist primarily of a two-part autobiography which covers his life up to approximately 1920. Part I, titled "Don't Blame the Stork" describes his boyhood in Norway until the age of sixteen. Part II, "Slowly We Learn" recounts his experiences as a roving lumberjack, miner, and field-hand in British Columbia, and the Pacific Northwest during the second decade of the nineteen hundreds. Most of his reminiscences and anecdotes deal with the work and the living conditions of the logging industry at that time.

Overview

Hagbard Edwards was a member of the General Organization Committee of the Industrial Union of Lumber Workers. Mr. Edwards's papers consist of primarily of an autobiography, which describes his childhood in Norway and his experiences as a lumberjack, miner and field hand in the Pacific Northwest.

History

Hagbard "Herb" Marius Edwards was born in Kvalosater, Norway in May, 1894, the son of a fisherman. In 1910, at the age of sixteen he emigrated to America and settled in Wisconsin with relatives. In 1911 he headed West and for the next several decades worked primarily as a lumberjack in the forests of the Northwest and British Columbia, where he came into contact with union organizers of the Industrial Workers of the World. In the early twenties he became a member of the General Organization Committee of the Industrial Union of Lumber Workers.

Acquisition

The papers of Hagbard M. Edwards were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs by Mr. Edwards in January, 1972 and were opened for research in May, 1984.
