History
Buick Local 599 of Flint was originally organized in 1935 as Federal Local 18512. In 1936 it merged with all other Flint Federal locals to become Local 156. The arrangement was unsatisfactory and in January, 1939 Buick Local 599 was chartered by the UAW. This local is noted for its involvement in the anti-Martin struggles during the early years of its existence. Strikes occurred in 1941 and in 1945-46. An Industrial Union Temple Association was formed in 1941 for the purpose of building a union hall.
