Joe Hill Papers

Identifier: LP001154

Scope and Content

The papers consist of copies of letters from Swedish government archives. These letters were written to W. A. F. Ekengren, the Swedish diplomatic representative to the United States, asking him to intervene to secure a postponement of the scheduled execution of Joe Hill since Hill, whose actual name was Joseph Hillstrom, was born in Sweden and was a Swedish subject. There are also letters from Ekengren to the President and other government officials questioning the conduct of Hill's trial and asking that the execution be delayed and the case reexamined. There is also a telegram of thanks from Hill and a Swedish newspaper clipping. The latter and one letter are in Swedish.
