Mr. Hoke-Miller's papers consist mostly of poems and articles, especially a column entitled "A Laborer Looks at Life",which were published in the Flint area CIO Auto Worker (1939-1941), and later in Local 659's Search-light (1942- ). He also wrote regularly for the IWW Industrial Worker. Throughout his writings he also used such names as: Vickey Van and F.E. Lloyd, and all his works reflect his belief in One Big Union, his pacifism and his enthusiasm for the tenets of the IWW.

Abstract

A member of United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 659, Floyd Hoke-Miller wrote for the Local 659 publication, Searchlight, the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) publication, Industrial Worker, and the Council of Industrial Organization (CIO) publication, Auto Worker. Mr. Hoke-Miller’s papers include poems and published articles.

History

Floyd Hoke-Miller was born in Fort Mayberry, Arkansas, around the turn of the century. He attended high school, and by 1939 was a worker at the Chevrolet plant in Flint. Mr. Hoke-Miller was a member of the UAW Local 659, was active in the CIO until about 1948, and was a dedicated advocate of the IWW philosophy. As of 1979 he was a resident of Flint, Michigan.

Arranged in 2 series – Series 1 (Box 1), and Series 2 (Box 2). Folders are arranged chronologically.

Acquisition

The papers of Floyd Hoke-Miller were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in January 1979 by Mr. Hoke-Miller, and were opened for research in August of 1983.

Transfers

Approximately 35 complete issues of the Flint CIO area Auto Worker, 1939-1940; 8 issues of Searchlight, published by LAW Local 659, 1947, 1969, 1975-1977; 2 issues of the Detroit Auto worker, 1940; and a 1946 IWW constitution and set of by-laws have been placed in the Archives Library.
