Abstract

Mr. Pelham worked at Wayne State University from 1954 to 1968, and held both faculty and administrative positions. He began as a part-time faculty member in the Department of Political Science. Pelham became an associate professor in 1957, and assumed additional duties with the finance office in 1959. He took an eighteen-month leave of absence to serve as the first African-American controller for the City of Detroit. Upon his return in 1964, he became Assistant Vice President of Finance. He was active in national, state and local organizations, such as the Boulevard General Hospital, Boys’ Republic, United Community Services, the Mayor’s Committee for Economic Growth, the Detroit Historical Commission, and the Educator Consultant Advisory Panel to the U.S. Comptroller General.

History

Alfred M. Pelham held both faculty and administrative positions at Wayne State University from 1954 to July 1968. Pelham joined the University in 1954 as a part-time faculty member in the Department of Political Science. In 1957, he became an associate professor, and assumed additional duties with the finance office in 1959. He became Assistant Vice President of Finance in 1964, following an 18-month leave of absence to serve as the first African-American controller for the City of Detroit. He was active in national, state and local organizations which include the Boulevard General Hospital, Boys' Republic, United Community Services, the Mayor's Committee for Economic Growth, the Detroit Historical Commission, and the Educator Consultant Advisory Panel to the U.S. Comptroller General. He became an associate professor emeritus when he retired. After retirement Pelham continued to serve as an active member on over 15 boards of institutions and corporations such as the Michigan Consolidated Gas Company, North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company in addition to serving as a trustee at Children's Hospital, treasurer of the Detroit Institute of Arts, and on the executive committee of the Detroit Economic Growth Corp. He wrote extensively on public finance and administration as well as authoring books of children's poems and vocabulary games for children.
