Scope and Content

The papers of Ms. Topdahl include clippings, correspondence, memoranda and other materials relating to the work of these unions through the Joint Council of Teachers and the merger of the two unions in 1957. The materials also include data relating to merit pay tenure, salary schedules and the strike efforts of the unions in 1946.

History

Manilla Topdahl, a teacher in Central High School in St. Paul, Minnesota, was active in union affairs of the American Federation of Teachers in St. Paul in the 'forties and 'fifties. She served a term as president of the St. Paul Federation of Women Teachers, Local 28 and subsequently as vice-president of the St. Paul Federation of Teachers, the organization resulting from the merger of the Federation of Women Teachers and the men's St. Paul union, Local 43, in 1957.

Abstract

Educator Manilla Topdahl was active in the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), serving a term as president of the St. Paul Federation of Women Teachers, Local 28, and as vice-president of the St. Paul Federation of Teachers. Ms. Topdahl’s papers relate to the activities of these unions through the Joint Council of Teachers and the merger of the Federation of Women Teachers Local 28 and the men’s St. Paul AFT Local 43.

The papers of Manilla Topdahl were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in October of 1970 by Ms. Topdahl and were opened for research in November of 1987.
