Interviews were conducted with 37 SWE-affiliated women engineers and their associates, individually or in pairs. Recordings and transcripts of the interviews are available, as well as biographical sketches of the interviewees.
Collection consists of video recordings and transcripts of 34 interviews with the following individuals: Betty Lou Bailey, Eleanor Baum, Lois Bey, Yvonne Brill and Naomi Brill (interviewed together), Patricia Brown, Yvonne Clark and Irene Sharpe (interviewed together), Lois Cooper, Stella Lawrence Daniels, Bonnie Dunbar, Margaret Eller, Thelma Estrin, Ann Fletcher, Evelyn Fowler, Isabelle French and Elaine Pitts (interviewed together), Ruth Gordon, Lois Graham, Arminta Harness, Ivy F. Hooks, Suzanne Jenniches, Barbara “Bobbi” Johnson, Margaret Kipilo, Anna Longobardo, Alva Matthews, Naomi McAfee, Mary McCarthy, Dorothy Morris, Maryly Van Leer Peck, Irene Peden, Carolyn Phillips, Elizabeth “Pete” Plunkett, Betty Preece, Gloria Reinish, Margaret Taber, and Josephine “Jo” Webb.

Abstract

In the early 2000s, the Society for Women Engineers, working with its archivist, conducted interviews of pioneering women engineers across engineering disciplines, in order to document the history of women in engineering from the 1930s to the present, as well as the founding and development of SWE. The project was sponsored by SWE through funding provided by the Ford Motor Company Fund and managed by the Reuther Library. Interviews were conducted with 37 SWE-affiliated women engineers and their associates, individually or in pairs. Video recordings and transcripts of the interviews are available, as well as biographical sketches of the interviewees.

History

Arrangement

Recordings are arranged alphabetically by interviewee last name. Transcripts and biographies are arranged by interview number, which corresponds to the alphabetical arrangement.

Custodial History

The original collection name assigned by the creator was the Society of Women Engineers Oral History Project: Profiles of SWE Pioneers.

Acquisition

Deposited by the Society of Women Engineers between 2003 and 2006.

Transcripts were printed and are available as paper documents. Duplicate access copies of recordings available on VHS and DVD.
