The correspondence extends through 1952 and such matters are discussed as a plan to call together a Council of Labor and Science made up of leading figures in various fields to study the ramifications of advanced technology, and Wiener's reactions to an article written by Reuther on peace. This correspondence, with the exception of Wiener's letter of July 26, 1950, is not contained in the UAW President's Office - Walter P. Reuther Collection.

Abstract

The author of "Cybernetics or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine," mathematician Norbert Wiener pioneered the science of communication and control theory known as cybernetics. Mr. Wiener’s papers consist of copies of correspondence with Walter Reuther regarding issues of labor and automated manufacturing.

History

Norbert Wiener was a Professor of Mathematics at MIT who pioneered in the development of automation and who was the author of Cybernetics. This correspondence with Walter Reuther was initiated by him in 1949 because he wished to stimulate consideration of the long-range effect on labor implicit in the trend toward automated manufacturing.

Acquisition

The Norbert Wiener Collection consisting of photocopies of corres-pondence from the Institute Archives at the Massachusette Institute of Technology was placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs at the suggestion of Professor Charles Weiner of MIT and was opened for research in April of 1984.
