The papers of Don Stevens consist of flyers and mimeographed bulletins issued by the Chicago Newspaper Guild from January to December 1938 in its battle with the Hearst-owned Chicago-American and the Chicago Herald Examiner. The conflict between the Chicago Newspaper Guild and management included contract grievances, alleged arbitrary firings and the struggle of the Guild to obtain recognition as a bargaining unit.

Abstract

Don Stevens was an American Newspaper Guild (predecessor of The Newspaper Guild) organizer and served as executive secretary of the Chicago Newspaper Guild. His papers relate to the Chicago Guild's battle with management.

History

Don Stevens was an organizer of the American Newspaper Guild for the American Federation of Labor in the nineteen thirties, and subsequently served as executive secretary of the Chicago Newspaper Guild. He was later discharged by William Green, president of the AFL. Stevens filed formal charges against Green with the National Labor Relations Board for alleged violations of the Wagner Act.

Acquisition

The papers of Don Stevens were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs by Mr. Stevens in October of 1971, and were opened in January of 1987.

Transfers

Approximately 20 photographs relating to Mr. Stevens' work with the Chicago News-paper Guild and other guilds in their struggle with the Hearst management have been placed in the Archives Audiovisual Collection. Two cassettes of an oral his-tory interview conducted in October, 1971, have also been given to this collection.
