History

Louis A. Schwartz was born in Cleveland, Ohio on February 7, 1904. He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1926. Among the posts he held were Chief Psychiatrist, Harper Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and professor of psychiatry, School of Medicine, Wayne State University. Dr. Schwartz was a friend and an admirer of Walter Reuther. In 1979 he donated a wooden carving to the Reuther Library which he had done in honor of Walter Reuther. The piece bears the inscription "Walter Reuther was like a sturdy oak-sculpted by Louis A. Schwartz, M.D., Orange River, Fla., 1957."

Acquisition

The papers of Louis A. Schwartz, M.D., were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in April of 1979 by Dr. Schwartz and were opened for research in October of 1986.

Transfers

Several photographs of Dr. Schwartz with his abstract carving have been placed in the Archives Audiovisual Collection. The sculpture itself has been placed in the Reading Room, Reuther Library, Wayne State University.
Schwartz's sculpture was placed in the Reuther Library vault, 9-19-2017.
