History

S. L. Hoffman came to the United States from Russia in 1900 at the age of fifteen. Upon arriving in this country, he worked in the garment trades and subsequently set up his own manufacturing company. In 1918 he joined the Teachers' Union Auxiliary, New York City, and helped the union with both advice and funds. His interest in teachers and teaching continued for a half century. In 1935 he became an associate member of the Teachers' Guild and in 1961 was the recipient of an award at the United Federation of Teachers Spring Conference.

In 1940 Mr. Hoffman was appointed to a committee to assist the United States Department of Labor draft minimum wage legislation. In 1943 Chester Bowles, head of the Office of Price Administration, appointed him to an advisory committee on price problems and in 1951 Michael DiSalle appointed him to a similar post in the Office of Price Stabilization.
