Abstract

A charter member of United Auto Workers Local 484, Ralph Goodman served as president of Local 484 for twenty-five years. Mr. Goodman’s papers reflect his concerns regarding the political activities of Local 484.

History

Ralph J. Goodman went to work with the Borg and Beck Company, Chicago, Illinois in 1942 and when UAW Local 484 was founded in 1943, he became a trustee and later a member of its Bargaining Committee. Subsequently he was elected Vice-President. In 1955 he was elected President of Local 484 and served for twenty-five years until he retired in 1980. In 1980 he was a recipient of the Walter P. Reuther Distinguished Service Award.

Acquisition

The papers of Ralph J. Goodman were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in October of 1981 by Mr. Goodman and were opened for research in May of 1984.

Transfers

A few photographs of Mr. Goodman with prominent labor union officials have been placed in the Archives Audiovisual Collection.
