History

Alexander Cook was born in Russia in 1901. His parents emigrated to America when he was four months old and settled in Colorado. After a stint in the United States Army, Mr. Cook came to Flint, Michigan where he began work in the Fisher Body Plant No. 1. One of the founders of United Automobile Workers Federal Labor Union No. 18331, he was elected president of the union in 1933 and re-elected president of the union in 1934. Mr. Cook subsequently became president of the Automobile Workers Council of Flint, which included members from Buick, A.C. Spark Plug, Fisher Body No. 1, and Fisher Body No. 2. Fired for his union activities, he worked as a union organizer for the AFL in the thirties.

Acquisition

The papers of Alexander Cook were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in July of 1992 by his son, Kenneth Cook, and were opened for research in May of 1993.
