The papers in this collection relate to the work conducted by Fred L. Lodge, International Representative from UAW Region 6, amalgamated local 887. Half of the collection covers Lodge’s position as a representative including correspondence, grievances, negotiations, a scab report, and publications related to region 6 and local 887. In the 1960’s Lodge was assigned to conduct research on right wing politics, extremist groups, and anti-unionism as part of a special committee. The second half of this collection features Lodge’s findings on these various topics which include the John Birch Society, labor unions and the right wing, and extremist groups. Series Description: Series 1: UAW Region 6, 1948-1980, correspondence, negotiations, agreements, and publications from UAW region 6 and local 887. In order to make material available, social security numbers have been redacted from box 1 folders 11, 13, and 14. Series 2: Political Research, 1960-1971, publications, newspapers, and research related to right wing politics, extremist groups, and anti-unionism.

Abstract

The Fred L. Lodge Papers include regional and local office files from UAW Region 6 and Local 887 from 1948-1980. Lodge was also involved in conducting research for the UAW on right wing politics, extremist groups, and anti-unionism, which is featured in the second series.

History

Fred L. Lodge was the International Representative from the Retired Workers Service Center, UAW Region 6, amalgamated local 887 out of California. In 1966 Lodge was appointed to the Committee on Extremist Groups through the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, where he did extensive research on right wing politics, extremist groups, and anti-unionism.

Folders in each series are simply listed by their location within each box. They are not arranged, so any given subject may be dispersed throughout several boxes within each series.

Acquisition

The Fred L. Lodge Papers were received July of 1994 from Fred Lodge, sent through Carolyn Tate at UAW Region 6, Retired Workers Service Center.
