Scope and Content

The Guy Stern Papers contain research matierals regarding Germany during, and immediatley following, World War II. These materials are particularly focused on socialist politics and include reports on the situation in Germany during and after the war, as well as a couple editions of Sozialistische Einheit newspaper. Oversize posters related to the joining of communist and socialist parties in Germany are available through the AV Department.

History

Guy Stern was born in 1922 in Germany. He moved to the United States before the commencement of World War II, joined the U.S. military and trained at Camp Ritchie. Immediately following D-Day, Stern worked as an interrogator of German war prisoners. After the war Stern earned his PhD from Columbia University and served as a Professor at various colleges in the U.S. and Germany over the course of his life focusing on German literature.

Stern retired in 2003 from Wayne State University as a Distinguished Professor, but continued to stay active in lecturing and academia for many years.
