Abstract

The Research Department of the American Federation of Teachers is one of the oldest departments of within the AFT and this particular collection contains collective bargaining contracts negotiated by AFT affiliates and from the NEA, AAUP and other unions that represent teachers in K-16, paraprofessionals, nurses and public employees.

History

The Research Department of the American Federation of Teachers is one of the oldest departments of within the AFT and it continues to make available information to AFT members concerning various issues with collective bargaining. This includes research for collective bargaining negotiations such as budgets, health care issues and of course contract language. This collection of collective bargaining contracts negotiated by AFT affiliates as well as contracts from NEA, AAUP and other unions that represent teachers in K-16, paraprofessionals, nurses and public employees. Also included in this collection are AFT affiliate state constitutions, and various school district handbooks. Of note in series II there are contract language for community education and charter schools. The rule books and handbooks are especially interesting for some are pre collective bargaining and contain unique language on the duties of employees and what was expected of students.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged in 3 series. Series 1 Box 1-32, Folders are arranged in original order by local number. Series 2 Box 32-33 and Series 3 Box 33-36 the folders are simply listed with minimal amount of processing. Like subjects are grouped together only.

Acquisition

The bulk of the contracts came at one time from the AFT research department. Various CBAs came sporadically from locals to the archives and were stored in accumulation boxes.
