Scope and Content

This collection consists of correspondence, meeting minutes, speeches, literature, annual and financial reports, publications, committee materials, personnel information, and photographic slides related to Dr. Frederick W. Hyde, Jr., M.D. and his role as an administrator and Director of Grace Hospital and Harper-Grace Hospitals from the 1940s through the 1980s. The collection also includes materials related to the Metro Northwest Detroit Hospital Corporation (Quadrangle) which was comprised of Providence Hospital, Sinai Hospital of Detroit, The Grace Hospital Division, and Mount Carmel Mercy Hospital and Medical Center.

History

Dr. Frederick W. Hyde, Jr., M.D, the son of Frederick W. Hyde, M.D. and Hazeldell Wright Hyde, was born at Providence Hospital in Detroit, Michigan on September 20, 1917. A graduate of the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1943, Dr. Hyde trained as an Internist at Grace Hospital. He began his career in hospital administration as the Assistant Director of Professional Affairs and the Director of the Outpatient Department at Grace Hospital in 1946. He continued his role in administration at Grace Hospital over the next several decades with a promotion to Director in 1971, a position he would hold until his retirement in 1982.

Dr. Hyde served on numerous committees of the Michigan Hospital Association, Greater Detroit Area Hospital Council, Michigan State Medical Society, and Wayne County Medical Society. He was also Chairman of the Advisory Board of Booth Hospital and a member of the Board of Directors of the Michigan League for Nursing. Dr. Hyde held a faculty appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Community and Family Medicine at the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Dr. Hyde married Marie Samoriga in 1986 however, his wife passed away and he later married Elizabeth Jean Hyde. Hyde had two children, Frederick W. Hyde, II and George Frederick Hyde, though George passed away at nine-months old.

Dr. Frederick W. Hyde, Jr. passed away on March 17, 2002.

Abstract
