Biographical / Historical

Inside out was founded in 1995 by Dr. Terry Blackhawk—a retired teacher, professor and author of numerous essays and three volumes of poetry. In its early stages, InsideOut placed writers in five Detroit high schools. The organization’s mission is to place professional poets and fiction writers in Detroit Schools to encourage imaginative writing and to promote self-esteem and confidence through publicizing and celebrating their work. Each year every participating school would have professionally bound and printed literary magazines featuring their students’ work. By 2018, InsideOut had expanded to conducting programs in twenty-three Detroit Public Schools for students in grades ten through twelve, with additional programs in middle and elementary schools.

InsideOut’s many programs include: Citywide Poets, an after-school poetry performance workshop for high school students, founded in 1997; Detroit Visions, a poetry and photography workshop for youth, founded in 1998; and the Writer in Residence program which places professional poets and writers in Detroit Schools, founded in 1995.

InsideOut has collaborated with: PuppetArt Theater, the University of Michigan’s Master of Fine Arts Program, the Michigan Opera Theatre, and the Detroit Institute of Arts. They have also been honored with many awards, grants, an invitation to the White House, and a feature on the PBS NewsHour series, “Where Poetry Lives”.
