Abstract

The Division of Business and Finance was created in 1961, and management of the division was assigned to James Lewis. His title initially was Assistant to the Vice President and Director of Business Operations. His title was later changed to Assistant Vice President for Business Affairs. The papers in this collection document the University’s business and financial activities, including contract negotiations, fringe benefits, labor relations, parking, property management, buildings and grounds.

History

On April 22, 1956, Wayne University became a state university. During a three year transition period the University was governed by the Board of Education of the City of Detroit, and the State of Michigan. The chief financial officer was the Vice President for Finance and Treasurer to the Board of Governors. Due to increasing responsibilities and duties, the Vice President and Treasurer announced in 1961 the organization of the Division of Business and Finance. The day- to-day transactions and responsibility for the Division's general operation were assigned to Mr. James A. Lewis with the title of Assistant to the Vice President and Director of Business Operations. His title was later changed to Assistant Vice President for Business Affairs.

The papers of Assistant Vice President for Business Affairs James A. Lewis were placed in the University Archives in September of 1971.

Transfers

A few photographs, an audiotape, and a drawing of the buildings south of Old Main with indications of University or non- University occupancy dated July 18, 1968 have been placed in the Archives Audiovisual Collection. In addition, books and serials have been transferred to the Archives Library.
