The papers in this collection reflect Dr. Fredrick's work as an educator first at the University of Michigan (1957-1960) and later at Wayne State University (1960-1976), and his work in the fields of Air Quality (1952-1958, 1966-1975), Industrial Toxicology (1932-1976), and Industrial Hygiene (1943-1976).

Series II, Industrial Toxicology and Industrial Hygiene, 1932-1976: Conference on the Principles and Practice of Industrial Toxicology (1969-1975), personal correspondence as a member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (1957-1958) and as a member of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists - Threshold Limits Committee (1942-1976), and other miscellaneous papers relating to Dr. Fredrick's concerns for Industrial Toxicology and Industrial Hygiene.

Series III, Air Quality Studies, 1952-1958, 1966-1975: Detroit-Windsor air pollution studies and surveys (1952-1958), and minutes, correspondence and reports as a member of the Intersociety Committee on the Manual of Methods for Ambient Air Sampling and Analysis (1966-1970) and as a member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry: Air Quality Section (1969-1975).

Series IV, Occupational Safety and Health, 1966-1976: Notes, correspondence, minutes, reports and publications covering Dr. Fredrick's involvement in local, state and federal Occupational Safety and Health programs.

Series V, Reports, 1932-1975: Reports authored and co-authored by Fredrick during his 44 year career in the field of occupational and environmental health. Reports augment materials found in the previous four series.

Series VI, State, Local and Federal Publications, 1939-1976 (Predominantly 1962-1976): Numerous state, local and federal publications covering all aspects of Fredrick's career in occupational and environmental health.

Abstract

William Fredrick, former Chairman of the Wayne State University School of Medicine, Department of Occupational and Environmental Health and Director of the Detroit Department of Health, enjoyed a career which spanned forty years. Highlights of his career include participation on a team which helped solve the lead poisoning problem in the auto industry during the 1930s and being appointed by Michigan Governor William Milliken to chair the state's Occupational Health Standards Commission in 1975. Fredrick's papers reflect his work as an educator at the University of Michigan (1957-1960) and Wayne State University (1960-1976), and his work in the fields of air quality, industrial toxicology, and industrial hygiene.

Acquisition

The William G. Fredrick Papers were placed in the University Archives by Mrs. William G. Fredrick in August 1976 and January 1977.
