Collection consists of recordings and/or transcripts of 7 interviews. Pioneers of the American Newspaper Guild and Newspaper Guild locals discuss their backgrounds and early lives, entry into the labor movement, union organizing efforts in the newspaper industry, conflicts with publishers and other unions, negotiations with Hearst, strikes, red baiting, and other important figures in Newspaper Guild history, with coverage primarily for the 1930s and 1940s. Transcripts exist for all but the William Farson interview. No recordings exist for the Charles "Tad" Irvine interview or the 1987 Don Stevens interview.
The following participants were interviewed: Edward Allen (his own written reminiscences in three parts); Jonathon Eddy, with I. L. Kanen, Jim Sesnick, and William Miller; William Farson; R. S. Gilfillan; Charles “Tad” Irvine (interviewed by Alan D. Cline); and Don Stevens (interviewed twice: 1971, by Dennis East; 1987, by Alan D. Cline).

Abstract

Between 1970 and 1987, Walter P. Reuther Library staff undertook a project to document the early history of the American Newspaper Guild by interviewing Guild pioneers. Alan D. Cline, a retired San Franscisco reporter and past San Francisco Oakland Newspaper Guild President, contributed to the project as well. Custodial History

The 1971 Don Stevens interview was originally part of the Don Stevens Papers.

Acquisition

Donated by Warner Plug and Dennis East, Walter P. Reuther Library, 1971-1987, with various accruals, including an addition by Alan D. Cline.
