The papers of Herrick S. Roth reflect his work with the American Federation of Teachers, Colorado Federation of Teachers, Denver Federation of Teachers and to a lesser degree the Colorado Labor Council.

[Description of collection Series 1: American Federation of Teachers General Correspondence, AFT Executive Council Meetings and Correspondence, Material relating to various Committees of the AFT and AFT Convention.

Series 2: Papers relating to States Bulk of material is from region designated to the AFT vice-president. The following states are or have been in the mountain states region of H. Roth: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Nevada, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.

Series 3: Colorado Includes the Colorado Federation of Teachers, Correspondence, Annual Conferences, Executive Board Council Meetings and Migrant Council. Also includes the Colorado Labor Council, Education Commis¬sion of States and COPE.

Series 4: Denver Federation of Teachers DFT Correspondence, meetings, Denver Board of Education, Employee's Council and Denver Classroom Teachers Assoc.

Herrick S. Roth was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on March 19, 1916; reared in Hot Springs, South Dakota; and presently resides in Denver, Colorado. Mr. Roth taught in the Denver Public Schools from 1938 through 1951 on the junior high level, except for a four-year period of interrupted service for military duty during WW II. From 1949-1951 he served as chairman of the Education Committee of the House of Representatives of the Legislature of the State of Colorado. He also served in the State Senate from 1957-1961. Herrick Roth, was a vice president of the American Federation of Teachers, has served as President and Executive Secretary of the Denver Federation of Teachers, Executive Secretary of the Colorado Federation of Teachers and president of the Colorado Labor Council. In addition to his work with the teachers union, Mr. Roth has served in a number of important community capacities, including membership on the board of the Denver Trades and Labor Assembly and the Colorado Children's Aid Society.

Mr. Roth has served as a vice-president of the American Federation of Teachers and president of the Colorado Labor Council. He has also been president and executive secretary of the Denver Federation of Teachers and executive secretary of the Colorado Federation of Teachers. Other offices included terms as a member of the Colorado House of Representatives and State Senate. Correspondence, minutes, reports, and other items include such topics as the Committee on Political Education, AFT elections and conventions, and anti-teacher union activities. Correspondents include Charles Cogen, Carl Megel, Dave Selden, and Al Shanker.


Arranged in 4 series – Series 1 (Boxes 1-10), Series 2 (Boxes 11-17), Series 3 (Boxes 18-25), and Series 4 (Boxes 26-28). Folders are arranged predominately in chronological order.
