Series Description: Series 1: Outgoing correspondence, 1957-1962. These records consist of letters from Roy Reuther and from his assistants, William Dodds, Edward Purdy, and Salome Williams.

Series 2: Non UAW individuals and organizations, 1957-1962. Office files of Mr. Reuther consisting mostly of correspondence from miscellaneous individuals.

Series 3: UAW departments, 1957-1962 and 1959 convention. Correspondence and other records relating to UAW staff personnel.

Series 4: UAW regions, 1957-1962. Correspondence and other records relating to UAW staff personnel. Most of this material pertains to the role of the UAW in congressional election campaigns.

Series 5: AFL-CIO departments, state labor councils and unions, 1957-1962. Correspondence and other records relating to AFL-CIO staff personnel. With the exception of the Committee on Political Education, there is very little material on the departments. There is very little material on the unions.

Series 6: Elections and election issues, 1958-1962. Research material relating to congressional elections.

Series 7: Michigan elections and election issues, 1957-1962. Correspondence and other records relating to elections in the state of Michigan. The records in the second part of this series concern election issues, most of which pertain to legislation.

Abstract

In 1957 the United Auto Workers changed the name of their Political Action Department to the Citizenship Department, headed by Roy Reuther. Their records cover activities until the subsequent name change to the Citizenship-Legislative Department.

History

On August 15, 1957 the Political Action Department was reorganized, and the name was changed to the Citizenship Department. Roy Reuther remained the director of this department. He was assisted by William Dudds and Edward Purdy. In December, 1962 the Citizenship Department, and the name was changed to the Citizenship-Legislative Department. For convenience of description, the Citizenship-Legislative files are in a separate collection.

In 1960, Mr. Reuther took a leave of absence to become Dupty Director for the National Voter Registration Committee of the Democratic Party. In 1962, he took another leave of absence to become National Director for the Voter Registration Campaign of the AFL-CIO. These records are not in this collection; it only contains the records of the UAW Citizenship Department.

Arrangement

Arranged in 7 series – Series 1 (Boxes 1-6), Series 2 (Boxes 6-7), Series 3 (Boxes 7-14), Series 4 (Boxes 14-24), Series 5 (Boxes 24-27), Series 6 (Boxes 27-30), and Series 7 (Boxes 30-41). Folders are arranged depending upon the series.
