History

The UAW International Executive Board created the Department of Conservation and Resource Development in 1967 under the direction of board member Olga Madar to work with advocacy groups in the United States and Canada in lobbying legislators and developing educational programs to preserve the natural environment. At the same time, the Recreation Department, established in the 1930s, changed its name to Recreation and Leisure-Time Activities. The two departments were linked by common leadership and by policy considerations as the union sought to improve the overall quality of life for a membership increasingly able to enjoy the advantages of a middle-class lifestyle. In 1969 the IEB Conservation and Recreation Committee added the newly-created Consumer Affairs Department to its general advisory responsibilities.
