Series Description: Series I, Contracts, 1962-1975: Correspondence, schedules, reports, lists of names, rough drafts, final copies and other materials relating to contract writing and revision.

Series II, Lay Teachers Strike--Seton High School, 1968: Correspondence, questionnaires, lists of names, and handwritten notes relating to the strike at Elizabeth Seton High School.

Series III, Public Relations, 1967-1977: Correspondence, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and other materials concerning the promotion of AFT Local 1700.

The Archdiocesan Teachers Federation (ATF)--Local 1700, the American Federation of Teachers(AFT)--was and organization made up of grade and high school teachers employed at the schools of the Archdiocese of Chicago. The ATF included both lay and religious teachers. Important names in the Federation's history are James Keane, President, and Robert Keeley, Executive Secretary.

Files consist of correspondence, memos, reports, lists and other related materials to the unions operations. The collection contains information on contract negotiations and the Seton High School strike in 1968.


Arranged in 3 series – Series 1 (Boxes 1-5), Series 2 (Box 6), and Series 3 (Box 7). Folders are arranged chronologically in Series I and II and alphabetically in Series III.


The papers of the American Federation of Teachers Local 1700 were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in January of 1982.
