Series Description: Series 1: Boxes 1-7, Organizational Papers: By-Laws, Minutes of the General Membership meetings 1940-59 and Executive Committee 1934-59, Treasurer's reports, 1934-43, General Correspondence 1935-59, Papers relating to Guild Credit and Union and Committees.

Series 2: Box 8 Papers relating to the American Newspaper Guild, 1950-59 Including materials dealing with the 1950 Circulation Conference held in St. Louis.

Series 3: Boxes 8-10 Arbitration, 1942-59, involving the Guild and the Globe-Democrat Publishing Co., the Star-Times Publishing Co., and the Pulitzer Publishing Co., stressing the period 1942-47.

Series 4: Boxes 11-14, Labor Disputes Papers relating to the Lockout of 1945 and publication of the St. Louis Daily News, the 1959 Globe-Democrat Strike, and the 1959 Stereotypers Strike.

Series 5: Box 14 5 folders of material from the Guild Historical File including clippings, correspondence and other papers relating to the history of the guild, stressing the period from 1934-1938.

Series 6: Boxes 14-21 The Representative Assembly and Individual Guild Units; 1934-66. Minutes of the Representative Assembly followed by the minutes, correspondence, and other papers of the Globe-Democrat, Post-Dispatch, Star-Times and KXOX Guild Units.

The St. Louis Newspaper Guild, Local No. 47 of the American Newspaper Guild, was founded in 1934 by members of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, St. Louis Star-Times and St. Louis Globe-Democrat. A unit from Station KXOX was added in 1948 and the Star-Times unit dissolved in 1951 when the newspaper suspended publication.

The St. Louis Newspaper Guild was founded by employees of several local newspapers. Their records reflect their activities as well as those of the American Newspaper Guild.


Arranged in 6 series – Series 1 (Boxes 1-7), Series 2 (Box 8), Series 3 (Boxes 8-10), Series 4 (Boxes 11-14), Series 5 (Box 14), and Series 6 (Boxes 14-21). Folders are arranged chronologically or a combination of alphabetically and chronologically, depending upon the series.


The papers of St. Louis Newspaper Guild were deposited with the Labor History Archives in June, 1971.

Twenty-eight photographic negatives of the last day of publication of the St. Louis Star-Times are in the Audiovisual department's negative file. Six representative shots were printed and are in the photograph files. Three negatives are from D. Goodrich Gamhle St. Louis Globe-Democrat.
