History

In 1957, UAW representatives created Local 36 to service autoworkers newly hired or drafted from Locals 400, 600 and 900 to build Lincolns and Thunderbirds at Ford’s Wixom plant. Sam Fishman, a UAW activist with Local 400 who later was elected president of the Michigan AFLCIO, became the first president of Local 36 and held the position from 1957 to 1962.
