Scope and Content

Series I: Executive Councils Correspondence, meeting notices and minutes of the NWA, Minneapolis Local Executive Council #1 (1947, 1958-1963), and other LEC's, and the NWA Master Executive Council (1957-1961) constitute the major portion. One folder of personal correspondence (1960-1961) is also included.

Series II: Negotiations Correspondence, notices, bulletins, working papers, proposals, and agreements for contracts from 1955-1967 are filed here. One subseries is concerned with various issues associated with contract negotiations and is arranged alphabetically; while other subjects covered are strikes and legal cases.

Series III: Safety Papers concerning the Air Safety Forums (1958-1964), the FAA, and various ALPA safety councils; plus correspondence, notes, investigation reports, charts, and photographs of air craft accidents and incidents (1956-1966) are covered. Information on the February 12, 1963 accident near Miami, Florida is extensive. In addition, issues associated with air safety are filed alphabetically, according to the subject. Also, maps, charts, aerial photographs, and three notebooks of the investigation of the February 12, 1963 accident in Miami, Florida.

Series IV: Miscellaneous This series consists of newsletters arranged chronologically. Also included are pamphlets, publications, charts, maps, and handwritten notes.

In September 15, 1942, Mr. Rockwell was employed by Northwest Airlines. He has been captain of the Boeing 720 and the 707-32- B Turbojet aircraft, and of Lockheed L-188 Electra Turboprop equipment. He has been actively involved in the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), holding various official positions. Included in these are the chairman of the NWA Local Executive Council #l - MSP (Minneapolis, 1959-1961), chairman of the NWA Master Executive Council, (1958-1960), Area Safety Chairman of ALPA, Region 3, (1960-1964), Central Safety Chairman of NWA (1963-1966), alternate of the Accident Investigation Committee of ALPA, Region 3, and Chairman of the Pilot Negotiation Committee (1963-1964).

A captain with Northwest Airlines, Mr. Rockwell has held many important positions in the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA): central safety chairman of NWA; area safety chairman, Region HI; alternate of the Accident Investigation Committee; chairman of the Master Executive Council; member of the Local Executive Council I; and chairman of the Pilot Negotiating Committee. Official notices, newsletters, handwritten notes, legal dockets, correspondence, charts, and maps reflect his work on these committees. A large portion of the collection deals with contract negotiations, safety, and accident reports. Major correspondents are J.C. Christie, Robert A. Ebert, A.S. Monroney, Donald W. Nyrop, Charles H. Ruby, Clarence N. Sayen, and Henry Weiss.


Arranged in 4 series – Series 1 (Box 1), Series 2 (Boxes 2-9), Series 3 (Boxes 10-16, 22) and Series 4 (Boxes 17-22). Folders are arranged chronologically in Series 1 and 2 (except for contract negotiations arranged alphabetically). Folders are arranged alphabetically in Series 3 and 4 (except for charts, arranged alphabetically).


The papers of Robert N. Rockwell were deposited with the Labor History Archives in June 1970 by Mr. Rockwell.
