These are reports of James McParland, Pinkerton detective, of his year-long effort to find evidence to convict officers of the Western Federation of Miners, for the murder of former Governor Frank Steunenberg, in Caldwell, Idaho.

They describe in detail his discussions with Harry Orchard, the confessed killer, and his attempts to have him implicate the "inner circle" of the WFM, resulting in the indictments of William D. Haywood, Charles Moyer, and George Pettibone.

History

A decade of labor problems in Idaho and Colorado mining communities had given much impetus to efforts to quash the Western Federation of Miners and other unions. The close association of powerful political and financial figures, with these efforts, is revealed in this group of papers.
