Abstract

Mr. McGraw was active in the unionization of the California aircraft industry from the early 1930s to the 1960s. Correspondence, press releases, handbills, notes, proceedings, and other materials document his career as an International Association of Machinists Local Lodge president, district secretary-treasurer, business representative, and Grand Lodge representative. He also served on advisory committees to the Institutes of Industrial Relations at the University of California and UCLA. Among the topics considered are UAW-IAM jurisdictional disputes, IAM elections, organizing and factionalism, and the Harvard Trade Union Program. Correspondents include Roy M. Brown, Eric Peterson, A. J. Hayes, and Wyndham MoGimer.

History

Born in 1903, Ashby McGraw became actively involved in the unionization of the California aircraft industry in the early 1930's. Between 1934 and 1940 he helped to found unions in three major Pacific Coast aircraft companies. McGraw's offices within the International Association of Machinists were many; including Local Lodge President, District Secretary-Treasurer, Business Representative and Grand Lodge Representative. He also attended Harvard Business School to study Labor Relations and later served on advisory committees to the Institutes of Industrial Relations at the University of California and UCLA.

Arranged in 3 series – Series 1 (Boxes 1-14), Series 2 (Boxes 15-16) and Series 3 (Boxes 17-25). Folders in Series 1 are arranged alphabetically, folders in Series 2 are arranged chronologically by topic, and materials in Series 3 are simply listed.

Acquisition

The papers of Ashby McGraw were deposited with the Labor History Archives in March 1969 by Mrs. McGraw.
