Series 1: Correspondence Deals almost entirely with the trusteeship of Local #26 and its legal ramifications.

Series 2: Legal Cases The Legal Cases include Cobb's appeal of the trusteeship to an AFSCME Judicial Panel, AFSCME's civil suit against Cobb, and Cobb's cross-complaint against AFSCME.

Series 3: Financial Records The Financial Records include the audit of Local 26 which caused the International Union to impose the trusteeship and listings of the checks called in question by the audit.

Series 4: Miscellaneous The Miscellaneous section includes minutes of various union bodies, the administration of the trusteeship, the Local #26 constitution, clippings, and published material.

Abstract

Alton Cobb served as president of AFSCME Local 26. He also served as secretary-treasurer of AFSCME's Detroit Council 77 during this time period. The trusteeship of Local 26 began during Cobb's tenure, and his papers largely reflect this conflict. His papers include executive board minutes; correspondence; and legal and financial papers centering on disputes over the trusteeship of Local 26 and Council 77.

History

Alton Cobb served as president of Department of Public Works Local #26 of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, located in Detroit, Michigan, during 1967. In addition he served as secretary-treasurer of Detroit Council 77 of AFSCME during the same period. The trusteeship of Local #26 began during Cobb's term in office.

Arranged in 4 series – Series 1 (Box 1), Series 2 (Box 1), Series 3 (Box 1), and Series 4 (Box 1). Folders in Series 1 are arranged chronologically. Folders in Series 2-4 are predominately arranged chronologically, although some are arranged alphabetically.

Acquisition

The Alton Cobb Collection was deposited with the Archives of Labor History and Urban Affairs in 1969 by Alton Cobb.
