Collection consists of transcripts and recordings of 29 interviews. Topics discussed in Part 1 include the rise of the militant teacher, early collective bargaining and strikes, AFT political structure, Shanker vs. Selden fight and Oceanhill-Brownsville. Part 2 continues the dialogue about collective bargaining, negotiations and strikes for members of the AFT. Other topics covered are the influence of the AFT on the national agenda on education reform, AFT’s rise in international issues, the NEA, and politics. Some interviews extend onto multiple tapes.
Part 1 consists of interviews with the following 17 participants: Rose Claffey, Charles Cogen, Patrick Daly, David Elsila, Sandra Feldman, John Fewkes, Catherine McGourty, Carl Megel, Robert Porter, Mary Ellen Riordan, Herrick Roth, David Selden, William Simmons, Rebecca Simonson, Mary and Charles Smith (interviewed together), and Raoul Teilhet.

Part 2 consists of interviews with the following 13 participants: Mary Bergan, Ellen Bernstein, John Cole, Paul F. Cole, John Elliot (video interview), Sandra Feldman (interviewed for both project parts), Day Higuchi, Tom Hobart, Jim McGarvey, Tom Mooney, Marjorie Stern, Louise Sundin, and Norm Swennson.

Abstract

Between 1985 and 1987, as part of an American Federation of Teachers-sponsored project, oral historian Renee Epstein interviewed leading figures in AFT on signficant aspects of their history with the union. From 2001 to 2009, AFT Archivist Dan Golodner concluded the project. Collection consists of transcripts and recordings of 29 interviews. Topics discussed in Part 1 include the rise of the militant teacher, early collective bargaining and strikes, AFT political structure, Shanker vs. Selden fight and Oceanhill-Brownsville. History

The original name of the project and the collection was American Federation of Teachers Oral History Project, Part I and Part II.

Acquisition

Donated by the American Federation of Teachers in installments, 1997 to 2009.
