Scope and Content

The Fred C. Pieper Collection covers the period from 1936 to 1940.

Important subjects are: The shift of the UAW from the AFL to the CIO. Early organizing in the auto industry, including appointment or organizers. The suspension of George Addes, Richard Frankensteen, et. al. The Homer Martin dispute.

The collection consists of minutes of the International Executive Board and reports to that board.

Mr. Pieper was an early leader in the unionization of the auto industry, having served on the UAW executive board in the mid 1930's. He was active in UAW Local 34 which serviced the GM Plant in Atlanta, Georgia. He was one of the leaders of the 1936 strike against that plant, which led to the Flint sit-downs of 1937. In 1939 Mr. Pieper was a representative of the CIO in the South, particularly the New Orleans area. He is presently the Director of Region 19, AFL-CIO in Denver, Colorado.

Fred Pieper was an early leader in the unionization of the auto industry. His papers reflect his work for the United Auto Workers and the Congress of Industrial Organizations in the South.


Meeting minutes are arranged chronologically for 1936-1940.


The papers of Fred C. Pieper were deposited with the Labor History Archives in August 1964.
