Scope and Content

The papers of Mr. Kaiser reflect his work with the United Chemical Workers, the Hamtramck Federation of Teachers and the Michigan Federation of Teachers. The collection documents both worker-related union-management problems within the Detroit plant and union-administrative tensions within the Hamtramck school system. The material dealing with the Michigan Federation of Teachers covers mainly union-school district contract negotiations.

To a lesser degree the collection relates to Mr. Kaiser's involvement in Roman Catholic labor organizational matters, specifically the Association of Catholic Trade Unionists.

Series Description: Series I, The Chemical Workers Union - CIO, Local 11-155, 1946-1962; Boxes 1-11: Subseries A: Logbooks, 1946-1954, Boxes 1-2, Logbooks contain Local 11-155 meeting minutes and negotiations. Subseries B: Office Files, 1946-1962, Boxes 3-9: The office files of Mr. Kaiser as president of CWU Local 11-155. Correspondence, union grievances, strike negotiations, meeting minutes, employment termination, clippings and other records of Mr. Kaiser's work as a CWU local president. Subseries C: Notes, Membership and Personnel Records, 1946-1962; Boxes 9-10: Drafts, undated material, personal leaves, new hires and resignations. Subseries D: The Bugle, 1948-1956; Boxes 10-11: Layouts and copies of Local 11-155's newspaper The Bugle.

Series II, Hamtramck Federation of Teachers, 1964-1979; Boxes 11-17: Subseries A: Office Files, 1964-1979; Boxes 11-17: The office files of Mr. Kaiser as president of the Hamtramck Federation of Teachers. Particularly well documented is the sit-down strike of 1965 as well as contract negotiations and teacher grievances. Subseries B: The Word, 1967-1963; Box 17: Copies of the Hamtramck Federation of Teacher's newspaper.

Series III, Michigan Federation of Teachers, Office Files, 1970-1972; Box 17: The office files of Mr. Kaiser as vice-president of the Michigan Federation of Teachers. Of particular interest are the union-school district contract negotiations.

Anthony Kaiser served as President of the United Chemical Workers Union-CIO, Local 11-155, in Detroit, from 1946 until 1959. In 1949 he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Detroit. Mr. Kaiser was President of the Hamtramck Federation of Teachers, and he served as Vice-President of the Michigan Federation of Teachers from 1970-1972.

Anthony Kaiser served as president of the United Chemical Workers-Congress of Industrial Workers (UCW-CIO) Local 11-155, as president of the Hamtramck Federation of Teachers, and as vice-president of the Michigan Federation of Teachers. Mr. Kaiser’s papers reflect his work in the UCW and in state and local branches of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), including documentation of the AFT Hamtramck sit-down strike of 1965.


Arranged in 3 series – Series 1 (Boxes 1-11), Series 2 (Boxes 11-17), and Series 3 (Box 17). Folders are arranged alphabetically by subject or chronologically depending on the series.

Series 1 is divided into 4 subseries. Series 2 is divided into 2 subseries.


The papers of Anthony Kaiser were placed in the Archives of Labor and Union Affairs in September of 1981 by Mr. Kaiser.


Photographs and tapes relating to the Chemical Workers Union, the Hamtramck Federation of Teadhers and the Michigan Federation of Teachers have been placed in the Archives Audio Visual Collections. Numerous bound volumes, selected pamphlets concerning labor education and related labor issues, and duplicate copies of labor newspapers received with this collection are available in the Archive's library.
