Collection consists of a recording of Ch'maj summarizing a series of three interviews she conducted with Makela between July and August 1975 at Loon Lake. She describes Makela talking about the Detroit Finnish Co-operative Summer Camp, or "Finn Camp," including its history and importance in terms of recreational and traditional cultural activities, his involvement with it and the Detroit Finnish Educational Association (DFEA), and his concerns about polticization of the camp by DFEA members.

Abstract

In 1975, Betty Ch'maj interviewed Finnish immigrant Elmer Makela, likely as part of a series of additional interviews with immigrants and their work and life experiences. Collection consists of a recording of Ch'maj summarizing a series of three interviews she conducted with Makela between July and August 1975 at Loon Lake. She describes Makela talking about the Detroit Finnish Co-operative Summer Camp (or "Finn Camp"), including its history and importance in terms of recreational and traditional cultural activities, his involvement with it and the Detroit Finnish Educational Association (DFEA), and his concerns about polticization of the camp by DFEA members.
