Scope and Content

Series 1: 1946-1959 Court decisions, briefs, Michigan House and Senate Bills and Journal excerpts, and miscellaneous documents and printed materials relating to the Ford-Canton decisions (Park vs. Appeal Board) of the Michigan Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals, and the Appeal Board of the Michigan Employment Security Commission. The materials were given to Mr. Haughton by Gov. G. Mennen Williams to make recommendations regarding changes in the LABOR DISPUTE DISQUALIFICATIONS provisions of the Michigan Employment Security Act.

Series 2: Notes and Clippings, 1969 Relating to techniques for fact-finding, mediation, or arbitration of campus disputes and strikes of public employees.

Series 3: DiGiorgio Arbitration, 1964-1969, bulk 1966-1967 Transcripts, exhibits, correspondence, notes, clippings, recommendations and findings of arbitrators, reports, and miscellaneous documents pertaining to the initial arbitration between DiGiorgio Corp., National Farm Workers Assn., Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee, and the Teamsters Union regarding the holding of representation elections for farm workers; and to subsequent arbitration of contract negotiations between DiGiorgio and the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee.

Clippings, briefs, transcripts, correspondence, notes, and other materials gathered by Mr. Haughton, who served with the U.S. Social Security Board (1941-42); the Detroit and National War Labor boards (1942-45); the U.S. Conciliation Service (1946-47); the Institute of Industrial Relations at the University of California at Berkeley (1947-50); as impartial arbitrator for the UAW and Ford Motor Company (1950-55); and, with Wayne State University, first as director of the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations and later as vice-president for Urban Affairs. Mr. Haughton also served as co-arbitrator for the dispute involving the DiGiorgio Corporation, the National Farm Workers Association, the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee, and the Teamsters Union. He was appointed president of the Board of Mediation for Community Disputes in New York City in 1970, and also mediated teachers' strikes in Detroit. Subjects discussed include campus disputes, collective bargaining for farm workers, and strikes by public employees. Among the correspondents are Edmund Brown, Cesar Chavez, Robert DeGiorgio, William Kirchner, and George Murphy.

The papers of Ronald W. Haughton were deposited with the Archives of Labor History and Urban Affairs in 1961 and 1970 by Mr. Haughton.
