George Roberts was born in Louisville, Kentucky on March 3, 1904. He dropped out of school at the age of 15 to help support the family. In 1933, he was appointed a representative of the United Rubber Workers of America; and in 1963 he assumed the post of International Representative of the URW of A on the Pacific Coast. Mr. Roberts served on the War Production Board and the Los Angeles CIO Counci1.

Mr. Roberts served as an International representative for the United Rubber Workers, mainly in Alabama, Ohio, and California. News releases, bulletins, clippings, and correspondence document the unionization of rubber workers in Gadsden, Alabama, and at Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Akron, Ohio. The beating Roberts suffered in Gadsden because of union activities is discussed. Other subjects covered are the Los Angeles CIO Council, the National Defense Mediation Board, the National War Labor Board, and the War Production Board. Major correspondents are William Collins, William Green, and Homer Martin.


Arranged in 2 series – Series 1 (Boxes 1-3), and Series 2 (Box 1). Folders are arranged alphabetically, except for correspondence which is arranged chronologically.
