The collection also contains some documents pertaining to his experiences as a North Muskegon Alderman, as a president of the Michigan Laymen's Fellowship of Congregational Churches, as a lay minister, as a member of the Governor's Commission on Employment of Older Workers, as chairman of the Muskegon County Democratic Committee, as secretary of the Ninth Congressional Democratic Committee, as a Democratic candidate for the State Senate and for United States Congress, as a Presidential Elector in 1960, as a substitute high school English teacher, as chairman of the Committee on Regent Responsibility for University Participation in Education Aboard, a sub-committee of Governing Boards of State Universities and Colleges.

Series Description:

Series I - Office File, 1932-1966 and Miscellaneous Published Material: The material in this series is divided into two parts - Office File and Published Material. The records of part one pertain to a variety of topics, no one of which is large enough to comprise a separate series. Most of the topics relate to Mr. Vanderploeg's church activity, his landscape business, and his political activity. The records within these categories are arranged alphabetically. There are twenty-nine folders labeled "miscellaneous material". These records consist of correspondence, invitations, press releases, and reports pertaining to a variety of topics which were found in folders labeled by date only. The published material of part two comprises two manuscript boxes and pertains to civil rights, congregational church social action programs, education, land-scape architecture, and politics.

Series II - Michigan State and Oakland Universities Board of Regents, 1958-1963 The records of this series are divided into three parts - Trustee, Michigan State University; Association of Governing Boards of State Universities and Colleges; and Election Campaign for Trustee, 1963. The records of part one pertain to the management of Michigan State University, and they are arranged alphabetically. The records of part two pertain to Mr. Vanderploeg's experience as Chairman of the Committee on Regent Responsibi¬lity for University Participation Abroad. They relate mostly to conferences in which he participated. The records are arranged alphabetically. The records of section three pertain to Mr. Vanderploeg's campaign for re-election as a Trustee. At the end of this series, there is one expanding folder which contains a few items of published material pertaining to this series.

Series III - State Senator The records of this series are divided into four parts - correspondence, office file, election campaigns, 1964 and 1966, and published material. The correspondence is divided into two sections, 1964-65, and 1966-67. Within each section, the records are arranged alphabetically be general letter of the alphabet according to the surnames of the correspondents or according to the organization which is corresponding. The records in section two mostly pertain to legislation, and they are arranged alphabetically. In some cases, the number of the bill and the date is listed, e.g. Air and Water Pollution Legislation, 1965 (Senate Bill 143). At the end of this section, there are some folders which are labeled only by the number of the bill. These folders are arranged numerically. The records in section three pertain to the election campaign of 1964 in which Mr. Vanderploeg was elected State Senator and to the election campaign of 1966 in which Mr. Vanderploeg ran for re-election and was defeated. The published material of part 4 comprises two manuscript boxes and one paige box.

Series IV - Addenda The material in this series was received after the material in the 3 preceding series had already been processed and described. This fourth series is divided as follows; Box 42 contains material covering the 1920's and earlier; Box 43 contains material covering the 1930's; Boxes 44-45 contain material covering the 1940's; Boxes 46-49 contain material covering the 1950's; and Boxes 50-52 contain material covering the 1960's.

Series V - Addenda The material in this series was received after the material in the 4 preceding series had already been processed and described. This fifth series is divided as follows: Boxes 53-55 contain material covering the 1940's; and Box 56 contains material covering the 1950's.

Series VI - Addenda The material in this series was received after the material in the 5 preceding series had already been processed. This sixth series is divided as follows: Boxes 57-58 contain material covering the 1940's; and Boxes 59-60 contain material covering the 1950's.

Series VII - Cards and Tapes This series is composed of cards and tapes which cover the years 1964-1966.

Series VIII - Photographs This series is composed of photographs which cover the years 1938—1966.

Abstract

A landscape architect in Muskegon, Michigan, Mr. Vanderploeg served on the Board of Trustees of Michigan State University, and the Michigan State Senate, and held many local offices. Correspondence, reports, minutes, and other items cover election campaigns, university participation in education abroad, and political activities. Correspondents include Birch Bayh, Jerome Cavanagh, Mark Clark, Gerald Ford, Robert Griffin, Albert Gore, Philip Hart, Hubert Humphrey, Lyndon Johnson, John F. Kennedy, Clark Kerr, Mike Mansfield, Gaylord Nelson, Dean Rusk, Adlai Stevenson, Stuart Symington, and Harry S. Truman.

History

Jan B. Vanderploeg was born in Holland, Michigan in 1900. He graduated from Hope College in 1922, and he later attended Western Theological Seminary and Harvard University. He was employed by the National Park Service in Maryland from 1934-1936, and he worked as a land planner with the resettlement administration in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi from 1936-1938.

He then returned to Muskegon, Michigan where he established himself as a landscape architect. From 1957 until 1963, he was a member of the Board of Trustees of Michigan State and Oakland Universities. In 1964, he was elected to the Michigan Senate from the 33rd district of Muskegon. He served in the Senate until 1966. Most of the records in this collection relate to these three aspects of his career.

Arrangement

Arranged in 8 series – Series 1 (Boxes 1-12), Series 2 (Boxes 13-19), Series 3 (Boxes 19-41, 67), Series 4 (Boxes 42-52), Series 5 (Boxes 53-56), Series 6 (Boxes 57-60), Series 7 (Boxes 61-62) and Series 8 (Boxes 63-66). Folders are arranged alphabetically and chronologically depending on the series or subseries.

Series 1, 5, 6 are each further divided into two subseries, Series 2 is further divided into three subseries, Series 3 is further divided into four subseries, and Series 4 is further divided into 5 subseries.

Acquisition

The papers of Jan B. Vanderploeg were deposited with the Labor History Archives in May 1968 by Jan Vanderploeg.
