This collection relates to the work of the regional office and negotiations, contracts, grievances, and other concerns of the locals in Region 10. The back pay settlement with the Kohler Co. is particularly well documented. There is also material on general union matters and UAW programs.

UAW Region 10 emcompasses Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana, and its membership is employed in the automobile, agricultural implement, and other industries.

Raymond Majerus, who was elected Secretary-Treasurer of the UAW in 1980, began his labor career as an organizer of the independent Kohler Workers Association which became UAW Local 833 in 1952.

Majerus became an International Representative of Region 10 in 1953 and held that position during the period of the protracted Kohler strike (1954-60) which was not fully resolved until 1965. In 1972 he was elected Director of Region 10. He was preceded in that post by Harvey Kitzman.

Majerus served in the army as a staff sergeant during World War II and was a regent of the University of Wisconsin. He remained active in Democratic Party politics until he died in 1987.

Arranged in 3 series – Series 1 (Boxes 1-8), Series 2 (Box 8), and Series 3 (Boxes 8-23). Folders are arranged alphabetically and chronologically therein.


The records of UAW Region 10 were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in 1973 by Raymond Majerus.

Non-manuscript material placed in the Archives' Audiovisual Collectionwere eight photographs, two negatives and one mock-up for a strike poster, all relating to the UAW Local 833 and the second Kohler strike and boycott that began in 1954. Numerous pamphlets and contracts were turned over to the Archives library.
