Scope and Content

Important subjects covered in the collection are: Grievances, 1941-1957, 1962 Collective bargaining, 1941-1957 Series Description: Series I, Boxes 1-2, Office Files The office files of Mr. Smith as a member of the Shop Committee of UAW Local 653. Apprenticeship standards, bargaining zones, correspondence, job classifications and rates, personnel records, minutes of special meetings, and resolutions are in this series. Also included are handbills, songs, notices, and schedules.

Series II, Boxes 3-9, Grievances Grievance records of UAW Local 653 from the First Step through the Fourth Step of the Grievance procedure.

Series III, Boxes 9-10, Collective Bargaining Agreements Collective bargaining agreements concerning job classifications, rates, seniority, and other matters. Agreements, supplemental agreements, interpretations, changes, and proposed agreements are included.

History

Howard R. Smith was employed at the General Motors Pontiac Motor Division, Pontiac, Michigan and was a member of United Auto Workers Local 653. He was elected to the Shop Committee in 1943 and served until 1957. For ten years, he was the Chairman of the Shop Committee. Mr. Smith also served on the UAW National Bargaining Committee from 1954 to 1957. He retired in February of 1972.

Abstract

As an employee of General Motors Pontiac Motor Division, Howard Smith served as Shop Committee Chairman of United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 653 and on the UAW National Bargaining Committee. Mr. Smith’s papers document his work with the National Bargaining Committee and the activities of Local 653. Particularly well represented are the of grievances records of Local 653, providing insight to each of the four steps of the grievance procedure.

Arrangement

Arranged in 3 series – Series 1 (Boxes 1-2), Series 2 (Boxes 3-9) and Series 3 (Boxes 9-10). Folders are primarily arranged alphabetically.

Acquisition

The papers of Howard R. Smith were placed in the Archives of Labor History and Urban Affairs in October of 1976 by UAW Region 1B and Fania (Mrs. Roy) Reuther.

Transfers

Numerous pamphlets and booklets of agreements, reports, UAW constitutions, and proceedings have been placed in the Archives Library. Also included are many information booklets, form letters, newsletters, magazines, and umpire decisions.
