This collection is comprised of materials and some artifacts that may be only an individual item, a folder, or one or two boxes relating to any one subject. These include materials of individuals, families, organizations and congregations.

Folders in Boxes 1 through 3 are each on a separate person, organization or topic, in alphabetical order.

Box 4 contains materials from an exhibit related to the history of the Detroit Jewish community in the 1920s and 1930s.

Boxes 5 through 28 and 31 through 57 hold the records of various Jewish organizations, families and individuals, including scrapbooks, photos and artifacts.

Boxes 29 and 30 contain original copies of some issues of the Detroit Jewish Chronicle and other newspapers/ newsletters.

Oversize posters and a plaque from four B’nai B’rith lodges are also part of the collection. Original U.S. fractional currency and merchant scrip from Marquette, MI, in box 14, folder 33, were removed to the Reuther vault and replaced by color photocopies. Fragile items are noted in boxes 2, 15, 16, 31 and 40.

Note: Other materials, especially those of B’nai B’rith and the Philomathic Debating Club, have been removed in past years for exhibits by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and have not been returned. Contact the director of the Leonard N. Simons Jewish Community Archive at the Max M. Fisher Jewish Federation Building in Bloomfield Hills, MI.

Abstract

Jewish Community Archives: Small Collections is comprised of records, papers, photos, scrapbooks and artifacts, ranging in size from one item to a couple of boxes, of various individuals, families and organizations within the Jewish community of the Detroit area from the 19th century to the 1990. Individuals include Sarah Friedman, Meyer Prentis, Emma Lazaroff Schaver and Judge Charles C. Simons. Families include the Butzels and the Flayers. Organizations include the Alpha Omega dental fraternity, American Zionist Movement, B'nai B'rith, Brandeis University National Women's Committee Detroit Chapter, Gamma Kappa Chi fraternity, Hannah Schloss Old Timers, Home Relief Society, League of Jewish Women, Music Study Club of Metropolitan Detroit, Philomathic Debating Club, Primrose Benevolent Society, Sheruth League, United Hebrew Schools and Women of Maimonides Medical Society.

History

Jewish Community Archives: Small Collections is comprised of records, papers, photos, scrapbooks and artifacts, ranging in size from one item to a couple of boxes, of various individuals, families and organizations within the Jewish community of the Detroit area from the 19th century to the 1990s.

Arrangement

Folders in each series are simply listed by their location within each box. They are not arranged, so any given subject may be dispersed throughout several boxes.

Folders in Boxes 1 through 3 are each on a separate person, organization or topic, generally in alphabetical order. Some of the materials in Boxes 4 through 57 are not foldered and include scrapbooks, photos and artifacts. Three oversize B’nai B’rith lodge posters and one oversize wooden plaque are in Box 8.

Acquisition

Deposited at the Reuther Library by the Leonard N. Simons Jewish Community Archives in 2003.
